Introduction Biosafety and Biosecurity
The societal and scientific benefits of Synthetic Biology are constantly increasing, as illustrated by the initiation of SB projects such as the artemisinin synthesis. Nevertheless, it is important to ensure that the power of Synthetic Biology is used responsibly and carefully. IASB is committed to ensuring state of the art safety and security of Synthetic Biology. Guided by existing laws and regulations for molecular biology, IASB is adapting existing best practices to the specific requirements of this exciting new technology.
IASB is working on the implementation of technical biosecurity measures such as the screening of sequences for DNA synthesis, as well as on policy questions. With the Code of Conduct Project, IASB has taken the first step towards a responsible self regulation which works hand in hand with existing and future legislation in this field.
