International Symposium on Opportunities and Challenges in the Emerging field of Synthetic Biology
July 9-10, 2009 at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, DC
Organized by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), in cooperation with the U.S. National Academies, and the Royal Society
The IASB (International Association of Synthetic Biology) was invited to present at the meeting.
This symposium will begin to identify a framework for policy making and public engagement. Goal of the symposium is to:
- Review the development and growth of the field and its potential.
- Identify scientific and commercial infrastructure needs.
- Explore how Synthetic Biology could challenge present legal and regulatory arrangements (e.g. biosafety, biosecurity, Intellectual Property rights).
Discuss the underlying ethical dimensions of this new field.
